ECO LAWN FAQ
Is topsoil required?
I have a new cottage in which only sand is surrounding it. Can your product be seeded directly into the sand? Or is top soil still required? If top soil is required, how many inches thick do I need to spread the soil? I have a friend who has used your product in our cottage neighbourhood and it looks great! Thanks for your help.

Answer: If your cottage is surrounded by pure sand only then you will need to add about 2 inches of topsoil before you can seed it with Eco-Lawn. If the soil is a sandy soil, that is, it is not just pure beach sand, then you would not need to add topsoil at all.

Please note that if you do need to add topsoil first, allow 2 - 3 weeks after you put down the topsoil for the weeds that will surely come with your topsoil to germinate. Once the weeds have germinated you can kill them either by tilling them into the soil or via herbicide. Once the area is as weed free as possible, you can then seed with Eco-Lawn. If you do get some weeds after you have sown the Eco-Lawn, you can attack them once the Eco-Lawn is about 3 inches tall. You can do this by using a weed'n feed or by any other method of lawn weed control.

What species are in Eco-Lawn?

Answer: Eco-Lawn is comprised of the following seven fine fescue grasses:
Sheeps Fescue
Dawson Slender Red Fescue
SR5210 Creeping Red Fescue
SR 5100 Chewings Fescue
Jasper Creeping Red Fescue
Scaldis Hard Fescue
SR 3150 Hard Fescue
The percentage formula for Eco-Lawn is proprietary and is exclusive to Wildflower Farm.

What if I live below the growing area on your map?
I was interested in purchasing Eco-Lawn seed but noticed that where I live was not highlighted on the growing area map. Does Eco-Lawn not do well in southern climates? We just purchased a new home and we were interested in planting grass in our backyard and thought Eco-Lawn sounds just like what we are looking for.

Answer: Eco-Lawn is a low maintenance lawn grass that in most situations requires no watering, no fertilization and very little mowing. In southern climates, you receive very hot and dry conditions which would cause stress on the turf if it was not watered. This is why we do not show southern climates on our map of recommended growing areas. We have had people in warm climates like yours purchase Eco-Lawn and the reports we have heard back tell us that while they do have to water their Eco-Lawns there, the water usage is much less that with traditional turfs.

Is Eco Lawn available in sod rolls?

Answer: Unfortunately, since Eco-Lawn makes a deep root system, it cannot be sold as a sod. When Eco-Lawn is cut like sod, it's roots are severed and it dies. Since it is the deep roots that enable Eco-Lawn to be drought tolerant, we can only offer it in seed form. That said, Eco-Lawn does germinate quickly and will form a dense turf over a full growing season.

Will Eco-Lawn grow under large maple trees?

Answer: Yes, Eco-Lawn will grow under large maple trees. However, we suggest that in during first season of growth, that you treat your newly seeded Eco-Lawn as if you were in drought conditions and water it deeply at least once a week. Those maples absorb a lot of water and they dry out the soils underneath of them. Once your Eco-lawn has had a chance to get itself fully established, (and like any newly seeded turf grass this does take a full year) its deep root system will enable it to compete with the maples and you won't need to water except in extreme droughts.

Should I mow my Eco-Lawn before winter?
Should the eco-lawn go into the winter short? Does it need one final cutting before winter? What do you recommend?

Answer: It depends on what you'd like to see early next spring. If you cut Eco-Lawn short in late fall, it will green up quickly the following spring as it won't have to fight through the remains of the previous year's growth. If you leave it unmowed, it will still "green up" but it will take about two weeks longer to be totally green that it would if you had mowed it in the autumn.

Does Eco-Lawn go dormant in winter?

Answer: The answer depends on where you live. If you live where you'll get snow coverage, then yes, by spring Eco-Lawn will be brown and dormant. It will then green up quickly in spring. If you live in an area that does not get much in the way of snow, it will stay green.

How hardy is Eco-Lawn?
I'm quite interested in your Eco-Lawn grass seed but wonder if it would do well in Winnipeg. I understand the growing region in Winnipeg is probably zone 3 and at worst zone 2 if this helps. Could you let me know if this seed would be appropriate?

Answer: Eco-Lawn is guaranteed hardy to growing zone 3, so it will work very well for you in Winnipeg.

Will Eco-Lawn take over my neighbours lawn?
One question about the Eco-lawn grass: In deference to my neighbours, I'm wondering if there might be a problem with the Eco-lawn species propagating to the neighbours' lawns? If so, will doing the monthly mowing to prevent the grass from going to seed?

Answer: Eco-Lawn is not aggressive so it won't take over your neighbour's lawns. Nor is it passive, so it won't be taken over either. Like any plant, Eco-lawn will make seeds if it is not mowed, to prevent it going to seed, yes, mowing to a 3 inch height once a month will work.

Is Eco-Lawn salt tolerant?
I am interested in using Eco-Lawn. The concern I have is that I live on the sea side. Part of the area I wish to seed is only 4 - 5 feet above the water and will get some overspray in the winter. Is your product salt water compatible to this type of situation?

Answer: Most typical turf grasses such as Kentucky Bluegrass are not very salt tolerant, however studies conducted by the USDA and the University of Wyoming, have shown that fine fescue grasses (of which Eco-Lawn is comprised) are relatively salt tolerant, so you should be fine.

How much traffic can Eco-Lawn take? Can dogs run on it?
How well does the Eco-Lawn hold up to traffic? I have two large dogs that run like crazy in the back yard and I want to make sure this will survive. Thank You.

Answer: Eco-Lawn is designed for moderate traffic usage. If your two dogs run in circles around and around in your back yard, no lawn grass will be able to withstand this. If they simply run around on it but do not wear paths into your lawn, then Eco-Lawn will be fine. We had two Golden Retreivers for years and we never had a problem with them on our Eco-Lawn. But again, if your yard is small and they constantly run around in circles, they will wear out any lawn grass.

Is Eco-Lawn genetically modified (GMO)?

Answer: No! None of the species in Eco-Lawn are genetically modified. Four of the fescues in Eco-Lawn are native species and three are hybridized species.
